Most of the Buhurt or Medieval Combat groups have a +- 15 year spread on documenting armor and only allow armors from 1300-1600 or so. This is fine and mostly acceptable. But a better option is to use one source and use that to model your entire kit. If your armor does not feel safe then pick something that is safe, do not modify it to no longer be historical so it will be safe.
